Fixed and variable plans remain available
The 8760 Small Business Energy Program includes fixed-rate plans with different term lengths. Available terms can change over time. It also includes a variable-rate plan that floats with market rates.
The choice between a fixed and variable plan comes down to risk tolerance and budget planning.
A fixed-rate plan may suit a business that wants to know its supply rate in advance for the selected term. This can help with forecasting, especially when energy is a meaningful monthly expense.
A variable-rate plan may suit a business that is comfortable with price movement and wants exposure to market-based pricing. Monthly costs can rise or fall as market rates change.
For many small businesses, the decision is less about finding a single “best” plan and more about choosing the structure that matches their cash flow, usage pattern, and comfort with market changes.

Switching providers may be simple, but contract terms matter
While switching to 8760 is simple and seamless, we always recommend reviewing your current energy contract before making the transition.
Early cancellation fees may apply depending on the current supplier agreement. That makes a contract review an important step before switching. A lower posted rate may not produce immediate savings if exit fees or timing issues offset the benefit.
A proper comparison should look at:
Current electricity and natural gas supply rates
Remaining contract term
Early cancellation language
Monthly usage
Total utility bill charges
Business plans for the next one to five years
8760 also offers a calculator to help estimate possible savings on monthly operating expenses. A calculator can help businesses compare options, but the result should be reviewed against the full utility bill and the existing contract.
This is where a commercial utility bill review can be useful. It can separate supply charges from delivery, riders, taxes, and other regulated items that may not change when switching energy providers.
When a business moves into large commercial energy service
The September update also includes a clear threshold for larger users.
Businesses may qualify as Large Commercial clients if either of the following applies:
Large commercial threshold | Usage or cost level |
Monthly utility bill | Over $5,000 |
Electricity usage | Over 250,000 kWh/year |
Natural gas usage | Over 2,500 GJ/year |
For Large Commercial clients, we build custom rate structures and flexible terms through our strategic market aggregation process.
This matters for businesses with higher usage because standard small business plans may not be the best fit once consumption reaches a larger scale. A custom procurement process can look at future energy needs, not only the current contract end date.
Even if your business is currently under contract, our team can help you lock in future rates ahead of expiration.
