Electricity

If "12.01–12.06¢/kWh" appears on your electricity bill — or if your bill references “Regulated Services” or the "Rate of Last Resort (ROLR)" (formerly the Regulated Rate) — your account is currently on ROLR. ROLR prices are set by the regulator and are fixed until December 21, 2026. Many Albertans remain on ROLR and may be paying higher rates than they have to. Through the 8760 Home Energy Program, customers can access transparent, competitive electricity rates and stop overpaying for electricity.

Natural Gas

Natural gas pricing can be achieved through the “regulated option” or through a competitive contract. For the regulated option, natural gas prices are set on a monthly basis by the regulator such that prices can change frequently throughout the year based on market demand/supply fundamentals. There are also additional fees associated with the regulated option due to client losses. If you are looking for cost certainty, you can lock in your price with 8760’s competitive fixed natural gas rate and enjoy predictable costs all year long.

What are you really paying for home energy?

Take a closer look at your utility bill. Many Albertans are still paying higher rates without realizing it.

Rate of Last Resort or Competitive Contract?

But here’s what they don’t tell you:

You’ll sign a 2-year financing contract, pay for an expensive plan plus extra for the phone, and still won’t own it. Your bill easily balloons to over $100 a month, and after two years you’ll have to pay out hundreds more or return the device. It’s a choice without any real choice.

PS: $0 upfront shouldn’t cost you hundreds or thousands later!

Rate of Last Resort

The Rate of Last Resort (ROLR) is the default option for clients who are not in a competitive contract. The ROLR provides a fixed rate for 2 years on electricity (resets on Dec 31, 2026) while natural gas changes every month. Rates are approved by the Alberta Utilities Commission. The downside of using regulated services include: - Regulated service cannot be denied due to bad credit – providers charge a risk premium to offset losses due to bad debt. - Electricity is set for 2 years and will change +/- 10% at expiry – this may not reflect current conditions. - There is no choice relative to plan options. There is one rate for electricity and natural gas prices could change every month. - Regulated rates are typically not the cheapest option in the marketplace. - There is limited customer service and support.

Competitive Contract

The best option for Albertans is to enter into a competitive contract with an energy retailer. Competitive retailers offer a variety of home and small business energy plans, term lengths, and product selection for all of your electricity and natural gas needs. Benefits include: - Typically better pricing and superior customer service - More product options, including fixed/variable rates and various term lengths - Fixed price contracts from Alberta electricity providers can save you money in volatile markets - Various term lengths allow you to select the commitment period that’s right for you - Variable rate plans provide maximum flexibility and the potential to save during low price periods
